The Cougars were shown the door Tuesday when Millbrook abruptly ended their season in the semifinals of the Northwestern District volleyball tournament. The Millbrook Pioneers won with surprising ease, 25-20, 25-21, 25-16, considering Kettle Run had just beaten them eight days ago and ruined their chances of a regular season district title. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

OP star leaves game with concussion; Liberty surges to 27-22 victory

10/21/2008

Not every play that changes the course of a football game is a dramatic, thrilling, stupendous touchdown catch or run. In Friday’s pivotal Liberty-Osbourn Park clash, it was a seemingly innocuous tackle for a 1-yard loss midway through the second quarter. The play may have saved Liberty’s season, though, because when it was over, OP superstar quarterback-defensive back Dominique Terrell was done for the night with a concussion, and the Eagles’ playoff plans were focused and lucid after a 27-22 come-from-behind triumph in Manassas Park. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Bobcats deny Falcons outright title; playoff likely

10/21/2008

Now, Fauquier and Battlefield appear headed for a playoff to determine the titlist. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Battlefield grinds down Liberty, 2-0, turns eyes to Fauquier

10/17/2008

In high school field hockey, a winning team does not always need to shoot a hundred times a game, keeping the opposing goal keeper always moving. Instead, ball control, time of possession, and applying pressure can work just fine. Such has been the case for Battlefield (11-1 overall, 7-1 district) all season. The Bobcats put those same winning traits on display against Liberty Wednesday evening, allowing the Eagles (6-7, 4-5) only two shots on goal all game in a 2-0 win in Haymarket. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Ingram goes down, Khosa steps up

10/17/2008

The process of changing the balance of power in the Cedar Run District was in full swing Friday night in Haymarket. Visiting Liberty was playing smart, tough, confident football, and leading the defending champion Battlefield Bobcats 21-14 late in the third quarter. The Bobcats — ranked No. 14 in The Washington Post — weren’t playing poorly, but things weren’t going as scripted. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Falcons lose grip on first place

10/17/2008

If Steve Schultze becomes an author some day, he’ll be a superstar in the sports horror genre. For now, he’s only the Osbourn football coach and that was scary enough for the Fauquier Falcons. Schultze scripted the second half of their game Friday with a recurring nightmare that helped Osbourn win 26-24 at Falcon Field. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Field hockey wars: FHS vs. LHS vs. KRHS

10/17/2008

If an actual award existed for the top county field hockey team, this year's honor would go to the Fauquier Falcons. Fauquier completed a sweep of its four games versus Liberty and Kettle Run Monday with a 5-0 win over the latter in a game closer than indicated. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Even Zorn can't discover the elusive FedEx magic

10/17/2008

Despite all its bells and whistles, FedEx Field has never provided the Washington Redskins with any mystical home field advantage.Sure, Dan Snyder can pack 90,000 into the hollow stadium that Jack built, the DJ can play AC/DC and the stadium announcer can shush the crowd when the Skins' offense has the ball. All the gimmicks provided by the home team management from the “You suck” chant to the house reminder that “Redskins fans, it’s third down!” does little to make this an imposing stadium for the visiting team. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

It's West Virginia over Virginia, 19-0, in battle of first year programs

10/17/2008

The popular saying “missed it by that much” is not one that the Kettle Run Cougars are often able to apply. For a team that is now 0-7, thrilling tales of narrow defeats have yet to become folklore. Nevertheless, the Cougars came the closest yet to their first triumph in a 19-0 loss to the Washington High School Patriots of Jefferson County, W.Va. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

It's a Battleground Friday for Eagles, Falcons

Explosive second half, Thigpen's injury help Eagles destroy Stonewall, 41-0

10/7/2008

The sight of Stonewall Jackson running back Damien Thigpen dressed and cleared to play for the first time this season last Friday night caught Liberty coach Tommy Buzzo’s attention, and probably caused some gray hairs to try to sprout.A University of Tennessee recruit in football and track, Thigpen is uncatchable in the open field, and Buzzo knew his Eagles, coming off a demoralizing loss to Osbourn the previous week, could be in huge trouble if Thigpen ran wild in his season debut after an ankle injury. | 0 comments - ›› more ...
