Fortune cookies seemed to have more prognostic credibility than Greg Pappas as Monday’s Cedar Run District golf tournament approached.But Pappas looked like Nostradamus post-meet after the Fauquier Falcons had finished third behind two of the state’s best teams and well ahead of the fifth-place Liberty Eagles.Earlier this season, Pappas boldly predicted that Fauquier would beat Liberty in the season-ending meet, saying so even after the Falcons lost to the Eagles by 10 strokes in the Combs Cup tournament. Fauquier High running back Shawn Blount looked fashionable again Friday in a 42-9 victory over Culpeper and he credited his offensive line for that appearance.Those five big guys can be considered his stylists, of sorts. They fitted Blount with the football equivalent of ripped jeans, circa 1994, by cutting up the Culpeper defense. For now, Loudoun Valley is king of the hill.The Vikings stand alone atop the Cedar Run District volleyball standings, with Fauquier and Battlefield close behind. Loudoun Valley has one district loss, while the Falcons and Battlefield have two defeats each. Osbourn Park has absorbed three losses.Valley grabbed the lead by rallying from a two-games-to-one deficit last Thursday to down visiting Fauquier, 25-19, 25-27, 22-25, 25-23, 16-14. We do one thing well one time, and then we look horrible two plays in a row."In other words, one step forward, two steps back. Kettle Run volleyball players return to beat Liberty

Liberty High School had the atmosphere of a family reunion Monday when the Kettle Run and Liberty volleyball teams met for the first time since a school redistricting redistributed Fauquier County’s athletes.There were the hand slaps, the hugs; the smiles, the tears; the pleasantries, the arguments; even the nachos and, of course, the volleyball match. It set up like a nice homecoming for first-year Liberty co-coaches Theresa Gore Kevin Mozingo. If there was a play on goal, more times than not, Jenna Irvin was somewhere in the area.The junior forward-midfielder deposited two goals and assisted another in Battlefield’s 3-2 win over Liberty (3-2 district) Monday in Bealeton, keeping the Bobcats undefeated in Cedar Run play at 4-0. The qualifier “girls” may not be included in the name of every postseason tournament Lisa Combs enters this year. In 2007, she only played in the State Golf Girls Open.
