Falcons' Smith, Pappas, Eagle Eric Mehiel (who?) shine at district golf meet

9/30/2008

Fortune cookies seemed to have more prognostic credibility than Greg Pappas as Monday’s Cedar Run District golf tournament approached. But Pappas looked like Nostradamus post-meet after the Fauquier Falcons had finished third behind two of the state’s best teams and well ahead of the fifth-place Liberty Eagles.Earlier this season, Pappas boldly predicted that Fauquier would beat Liberty in the season-ending meet, saying so even after the Falcons lost to the Eagles by 10 strokes in the Combs Cup tournament. Liberty later crushed Fauquier by 16 strokes at the Sept. 13 district mini tournament, too. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Fauquier High running back Shawn Blount looked fashionable again Friday in a 42-9 victory over Culpeper and he credited his offensive line for that appearance. Those five big guys can be considered his stylists, of sorts. They fitted Blount with the football equivalent of ripped jeans, circa 1994, by cutting up the Culpeper defense. With so many holes, Blount needed only 14 carries to accumulate 175 yards and two touchdowns.“All of the blocking I had made it easy,” Blount said. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

A dramatic field hockey win for first place FHS

9/30/2008

All the team needed was 87 breath-taking seconds. If Fauquier High's field hockey is able to capture the Cedar Run District's regular-season title, there will be plentiful highlights and memories of critical junctures. But it is unlikely anything can top last week's battle with Battlefield. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Osbourn QB dissects LHS defense; Eagles stunned, 27-14

9/30/2008

Winless Kettle Run scores third TD of year in 40-7 loss to Eastern View

9/30/2008

Kettle Run High football coach Jeff Lloyd summed up his team's state of affairs Friday night after its contest with Eastern View High School: "It's been the same thing all year. We do one thing well one time, and then we look horrible two plays in a row."In other words, one step forward, two steps back. By contrast, when Eastern View running back Stevie Strother takes two steps back, it's merely the prelude to about 50 steps forward to the end zone. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Celebration tempered in Liberty win over Stafford

9/23/2008

Normally the moments after an exciting win are a joyous time when all the emotions of four or five hours of game intensity are washed away like dirt from your deck after a heavy rain.Basically, it’s relax, rejoice and exhale. But never so for Tommy Buzzo.Ever. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Kettle Run volleyball players return to beat Liberty

9/18/2008

Liberty High School had the atmosphere of a family reunion Monday when the Kettle Run and Liberty volleyball teams met for the first time since a school redistricting redistributed Fauquier County’s athletes. There were the hand slaps, the hugs; the smiles, the tears; the pleasantries, the arguments; even the nachos and, of course, the volleyball match. The Kettle Run Cougars swept the match 25-17, 25-18, 25-20, which created many of those mentioned mixed emotions. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Liberty volleyball falls to 0-2 in Cedar Run

It set up like a nice homecoming for first-year Liberty co-coaches Theresa Gore Kevin Mozingo. After winning three of four matches to open this season, they returned last Tuesday to Culpeper County High, where they coached in 2007.It didn't play out too nicely, though. The Culpeper Blue Devils beat Gore, Mozingo and the Liberty Eagles in straight sets, 25-19, 29-27, 25-23, and then Liberty lost 25-16, 25-19, 25-13 loss to Loudoun Valley last Thursday. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Eagles rally big, but fall in hockey, 3-2

9/18/2008

If there was a play on goal, more times than not, Jenna Irvin was somewhere in the area. The junior forward-midfielder deposited two goals and assisted another in Battlefield’s 3-2 win over Liberty (3-2 district) Monday in Bealeton, keeping the Bobcats undefeated in Cedar Run play at 4-0. Falcon field hockey opens season with two big wins

Two games into the 2008 field hockey season, the Fauquier Falcons own a 2-0 record.Fauquier opened its season Sept. 2 by cruising past visiting Kettle Run, 7-2, in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. That game was a good outing for the Falcons, but the more important result came Monday afternoon when they captured a 1-0 Cedar Run District victory at Osbourn Park. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

LHS, FHS golfers loom as dangerous underdogs at district meet

9/18/2008

The qualifier “girls” may not be included in the name of every postseason tournament Lisa Combs enters this year. In 2007, she only played in the State Golf Girls Open. This season, if Combs plays the Cedar Run District tournament as well as she played the Skyline Invitational on Tuesday, the Fauquier High sophomore has could advance to the Group AAA Northwest Region Tournament and perhaps, as a long-shot, to the Group AAA State Tournament. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Eagles golfers shoot season-best 314, take third at mini tournament

9/16/2008

Eight strokes may sound like a lot, but when spaced across four scorecards that’s a manageable number. And eight strokes is all that separated Liberty from the runner-up spot Saturday during the Cedar Run District mini tournament at Kastle Greens Golf Club.Granted, it took the Eagles’ best performance of the season to post a score of 314 and finish third behind Battlefield (300) and Loudoun Valley (306), but that score injected a bit of optimism into the Liberty lineup. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

FHS golfers win at Culpeper, but coach wants more

9/11/2008

Fauquier High coach Mark Ott thought the Country Club of Culpeper was a course tailor made for the Falcons, but they didn't look particularly good on it Monday.Their play was suitable for a victory, nonetheless. The Falcons won the Cedar Run District triangular handily with a score of 177, as Stonewall Jackson was disqualified for only posting three scores and Culpeper shot a 191 on their home course. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Horses and People brief items

7/1/2008

Editor's note: Due to space limitations, the Horse and Field Sports section of this week's Fauquier Times-Democrat newspaper did not include Horses and People briefs, nor the Sporting Calendar. We here at the Horse Sports desk recognize that these two items are by far the most read parts of our unique sports section. Therefore, we are 'publishing' the briefs and calendar in their entirety here online. Please refer to the Times-Democrat for other horse news, but trust that we continue to work hard to keep the horse sports news cranking out for local -- and out-of-area -- readers who've come to rely on. | 0 comments - ›› more ...
