The Plains This Week: Come to A Day in The Plains
The asters are in bloom, the pumpkins are arriving in the markets and yet a few hummingbirds still hang around, snagging a last-call sweet sip before heading south. As autumn speeds towards town, it must be time for A Day in The Plains. This Saturday, Oct. 4, A Day in The Plains will officially welcome fall to our town.
The event starts with Wakefield's Kelvy 5K Run that kicks off at 8 a.m., bringing runners down from the school's hilltop and into town. The race, named after a treasured Wakefield teacher and coach, raises money in his memory for the student financial aid fund. For more information, contact the school at www.wakefieldschool.org or MaryAnn Withers at (703) 327-4206.
After the winners of the Kelvy Race cross the finish line and receive their T-shirts, A Day In The Plains begins at 9 a.m.
The ladies of St Mark's church will be serving up their tasty food and hot coffee. The children will be enjoying entertainers and street performers. Musicians will be playing, stores will be welcoming visitors and prime sidewalk spots will be snagged to view the parade at 10:30 a.m.
The parade will feature floats, including one featuring local veterans, horses, antique cars, hunting hounds, shiny new cars and famous local folk.
The fun continues all day long with The Plains Community League's flat-screen TV raffle, performers, farm animal displays, crafters, magicians, children's activities, games and music.
A Day in The Plains is the day for everyone to come to town and enjoy a small town having a big party. The Day In The Plains is a great way to meet new friends and neighbors.
The special fall cleanup for The Plains is coming Oct. 15. Place all large items such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, washers, dryers, stoves and lawn mowers (please remove gasoline and oil) on the curb Tuesday night, Oct. 14, for pickup on Wednesday morning.
Oct. 15 will also be the pickup day for bedding, clothing, table cloths, curtains and shoes. These items will be donated to local charities and aid groups.
Please do not place yard waste, brush, motors, oil tanks, tires, batteries, oils, paints, anti-freeze or fruitcakes out for pickup, as these items will not be taken by the crews.
This special fall cleanup is for residents and business of the Town of The Plains that receive normal town trash removal services.
Tristan Connors celebrates a birthday on Oct. 2. Connor Glennon has a birthday on Oct. 5.
