Markham This Week: Longtime area resident mourned

We're back! The long jaunt to South Dakota is over, and the trip was safe. Memories to hold on to included good visits with friends; appreciation for the generosity of our local community which has reached out to many less fortunate than we are; many laughs over silly things that happened on the road; and thankfulness for a safe return.

The next step is to plan for more ways to help the residents at Pine Ridge who live in such grinding poverty.

Catching up a little bit: The Orlean Volunteer Fire Department breakfast for September was successful, with almost 200 people who came for that great meal.

The department can always use more volunteers in different capacities. (What that really means is that there are other things to do besides actual firefighting and medical duties.) The fall ham and oyster dinner will be 4-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8.

Important reminder to everyone who lives in our area: Make sure that your house number is easily visible from the road in both directions. Minutes can mean the difference in fire and medical emergencies. Check your numbers.

The folks who put on the community Halloween party at the Orlean Fire Department could use some help. If you have some time for that event, please contact Peggy Baer at baerbackfarms@aol. corn.

I am sad to report the death of Gene Dailey, who lived for a good many years near Markham. Gene was chief of the Winchester Fire Department from 1975-80, then chief of the Fairfax City Fire Department until 1990. He retired, thinking that he would stay at home to garden and mow grass. That happened, but he also became a bus driver for Fauquier County, delivering hundreds of children to schools in the northern end of the county.

Many of his "bus children" have fond memories of his fairness and kindness during those trips to school. Doris and Gene were active members of Cool Spring United Methodist Church, where memorial services were held on Sept. 27.

The Markham-Linden United Methodist Church Women will host its annual Blind Auction and Dinner on Saturday, Oct. 4, starting at 5 p.m. in the Linden UMC social hall, 13460 John Marshall Highway, Linden. For information, call (540) 364-1613.

The annual Blessing of the Animals will be 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, in the Leeds Ruritan Park in Hume. Everyone in the community is invited to come and bring the pets that own them. Refreshments for pets and their keepers will be provided. Please make sure that all animals are suitably restrained, whether they like it or not.

The critters who share my house have returned from their vacations during our trip. The young ones are fascinated with the printer under the computer and are presently learning to use the keyboard. Their spelling leaves much to be desired. The older cats have returned to their comfort spots and have asked not to be disturbed. The dog had a great time at "camp."
