Fauquier stays perfect, stomps Culpeper, 42-9

Fauquier High running back Shawn Blount looked good again Friday in a 42-9 victory over Culpeper and he credited his offensive line for that appearance.

Those five big guys can be considered his stylists, of sorts. They fitted Blount with the football equivalent of ripped jeans, circa 1994, by cutting up the Culpeper defense. With so many holes, Blount needed only 14 carries to accumulate 175 yards and two touchdowns.

“All of the blocking I had made it easy,” Blount said.

His performance was consistent with what has become a throwback offense for Fauquier. In all, the Falcons ran for 291 yards and five touchdowns against Culpeper, giving it a season total of 867 yards and 17 touchdowns rushing. Those numbers are reminiscent of the Fauquier teams that ran the unbalanced T offense under coach Tom Ferrell, beginning in 1994.

Over the last three seasons, Fauquier’s passing game had been a focal point in the shotgun spread offense that Greg Hatfield brought to Warrenton in 2005. That systems remains with Mark Scott as coach, but the strong running game has become a chic tweak to that style, if for no other reason than few opponents seem able to stop it.

“Culpeper gave us some things that we were happy to see and we tried to take advantage of it,” Scott said. “We’ve got a pretty good offensive line and those guys are opening up some holes.”

In particular, Fauquier (4-0 overall, 1-0 district) had great success running straight up the middle in its first Cedar Run District opener. Culpeper lost to Osbourn it its district opener, 61-14, and is now 0-4, 0-2.

“They just bust their [butts] and make the holes bigger for me to run through," Blount said.

Such holes helped Blount achieve his second 100-yard rushing game of the season (170 two weeks ago against Stafford) despite playing only three of four games. Blount failed to reach that goal of his last week, though, which had a trickle down effect to the offensive line.

“Our offensive line kind of took it personal last week that we didn’t even have 100 yards rushing [overall], Scott said. “We got back to work during the week and made that a focus of ours, so they came back out this week and played well.”

Meanwhile, the Culpeper Blue Devils had an unsightly running game Friday, but coach Greg Martz still found plenty to be pleased about. A young team stripped of much talent by Eastern View, a first-year school in Culpeper County, the Blue Devils were much improved against Fauquier, Martz said. He said they moved the ball better, communicated better, showed more leadership and displayed a positive demeanor.

“It was a good night for us,” Martz said. “Scoreboard, no. Otherwise, great night for us...”
