Falcons slip to second in district
For now, Loudoun Valley is king of the hill.
The Vikings stand alone atop the Cedar Run District volleyball standings, with Fauquier and Battlefield close behind. Loudoun Valley has one district loss, while the Falcons and Battlefield have two defeats each. Osbourn Park has absorbed three losses.
Valley grabbed the lead by rallying from a two-games-to-one deficit last Thursday to down visiting Fauquier, 25-19, 25-27, 22-25, 25-23, 16-14. Fauquier had taken the teams' first meeting in five games.
Diana Story, Fauquier's head coach, praised the level of play. She said both squads have good talent and overall execution, but the outcome eventually came down to the fewer number of mistakes.
"It was a fight. [The Falcons] played extremely well," Story said. "We had [a win] in the palm of our hand," she continued. "But an error here and an error there. Ultimately, I would say unforced errors led to the defeat.
"You can't afford that when you're playing a good team like Loudoun Valley," Story said.
The Falcons captured the second and third games to grab the lead. They then "came out flat" in the fourth, with Valley bolting to a 7-1 lead. Fauquier rallied to take the lead briefly before the Vikings staged their own comeback.
Ashleigh Peterson registered 14 service points and four aces in the match. Jasmine Marshall also had 14 points to 10 for Caitlin McDaniel and nine for Becca Edwards. McDaniel was the leading Falcon hitter with 12 kills. Peterson followed with 11 kills, and Laura Stockham added eight.
Fauquier entered the Loudoun Valley match with momentum after vanquishing its two county rivals. The Falcons swept Kettle Run in three games Sept. 22 in a non-league contest...
