A dramatic field hockey win for first place FHS
All the team needed was 87 breath-taking seconds.
If Fauquier High's field hockey is able to capture the Cedar Run District's regular-season title, there will be plentiful highlights and memories of critical junctures.
But it is unlikely anything can top last week's battle with Battlefield.
Fauquier trailed the host Bobcats 1-0 Sept. 24 most of the game, with the clock entering the final minute of regulation. Second by second rolled off, with the Falcons apparently headed for their first district defeat of the season.
Sarah Talomie, the Falcon coach, found herself on her knees, imploring her squad to find a way — any way — to fend off the loss.
The team responded by tying the contest with a mere 47 seconds remaining. Fauquier then needed only 40 seconds of overtime to tally the game-winning goal from Jessica Moon in the 2-1 contest.
Talomie now laughs about the waning moments of regulation play, but raw emotions reigned as Fauquier made a frantic push and the Bobcats fought to deny the eventual victors.
"I was screaming 'walk it in!'" Talomie said, explaining the team had been working on working the ball closer to the goal when the defense does not attack.
"We want to take the ball around the goalie and just push it in," Talomie said.
A slew of players from both squads fought for possession, with Star Cope winning the fight. "There was a scuffle in front of the goal. Everyone was just trying to push it in," she continued. "Nothing fancy..."See the Wednesday print edition of the Fauquier Times-Democrat for the complete story.
