Eagles rally big, but fall in hockey, 3-2

If there was a play on goal, more times than not, Jenna Irvin was somewhere in the area.

The junior forward-midfielder deposited two goals and assisted another in Battlefield’s 3-2 win over Liberty (3-2 district) Monday in Bealeton, keeping the Bobcats undefeated in Cedar Run play at 4-0. Liberty is now 5-4 after beating Culpeper 4-0 Wednesday.

“We just practiced so hard, like getting to the post and getting there, putting your stick down and then [getting] it in,” said Irvin

Liberty showed some late life in the waning minutes, as Sarah Doucet snuck a shot past Battlefield goal keeper Rebecca Wescott and Kensey Norman then followed up 1:22 later with a slapper from right in front of the goal box.

“Like, the first half hour didn’t go our way but the last five minutes were finally going our way,” said Norman. “The last two minutes, it was just so easy to push it down on offense and to score two goals which we should have had earlier.”

Because the officials kept the game time on the field and the scoreboard clock was inactive, the players did not know exactly how much time remained. After a quick pause, the officials called it as Norman’s goal came with only five seconds left in regulation.

“They were really excited to start off with and then once Battlefield scored, they kind of went down a little bit, so they sort of lost some of their momentum,” said Liberty coach Mary Beth Colvin. “And when Battlefield scored the second time, they really lost a lot of momentum. They got it back after we scored the first goal...”
