Thrill-a-minute Falcons bag another big volleyball win

They did it again.

For the second consecutive week, the Fauquier Falcon volleyball team hosted one of Northern Virginia's top programs in a key Cedar Run District match.

This time, the Loudoun Valley Vikings were the visitors, and they left Warrenton with a frown on their faces after falling in a five-game match.

Fauquier registered a 25-20, 16-25, 25-17, 10-25, 18-16 victory to elevate its overall record to 3-0. More importantly, the Falcons stand at 2-0 in league play after defeating Osbourn Park and Loudoun Valley.

Fauquier fought off three match points in the fifth game, which featured nine ties.

"The difference was we executed better in the fifth game than they did," Falcon coach Diana Story said.

Loudoun Valley held a 7-4 lead in the fifth game, but the hosts pulled back into a tie at 8-8. The Vikings then were serving for the match at 14-13, but Falcon Ashleigh Peterson forced a side out with a kill.

Valley had match point opportunities on its next two service opportunities. Both times, Peterson delivered kills to save Fauquier and retie the game.

Peterson then toed the service line with the score standing at 16-16.

On Peterson's first offering, Caitlin McDaniel hit a ball off two touches onto the floor for a one-point margin. Match point arrived on an unusual play. Jasmine Marshall set the ball for middle hitter Eva Houk.

The timing of the play went awry, with Houk and the ball missing contact initially. She was back on the floor when the sphere came down. Houk punched the ball to keep the point alive.

Loudoun Valley's defense had adjusted into a block-dig formation, but Houk's lofted ball cleared all the defense and settled into the wide-open rear right corner for a Falcon win.

"You can't get too much more exciting than that," Story said...
