Falcon field hockey opens season with two big wins

Two games into the 2008 field hockey season, the Fauquier Falcons own a 2-0 record.

Fauquier opened its season Sept. 2 by cruising past visiting Kettle Run, 7-2, in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

That game was a good outing for the Falcons, but the more important result came Monday afternoon when they captured a 1-0 Cedar Run District victory at Osbourn Park.

The two teams have battled numerous times over the last three-plus years, with the majority of those going into overtime. This time, a goal with 17 minutes remaining in regulation held up for a 1-0 Fauquier win.

"And, we didn't even have to go to overtime," Falcon coach Sarah Talomie said happily.

"We actually dominated the first half, but we just couldn't get the ball to go into the goal," she continued, noting her charges began to tire during the second half.

"I didn't substitute....I counted [OP] played 21 girls," Talomie said.

Freshman Miceile Barrett accounted for the game's lone goal, scoring off a scramble in front of the cage. Talomie said the fray's key moment, however, came in the first half.

"[Goalkeeper] Jen [Pfautz] made one of the best saves I've ever seen," the coach said of the sophomore, playing in her second game. "It was a hard, high shot. She leaped and stretched out with her left hand and made the save. She gets credit for the play of the game," Talomie said.

The first half versus Kettle Run accurately could be called the "Barrett Barrage," as Fauquier built a 5-0 margin before intermission...
