New firehouse dedicated
The site of an old fire hall is now home to a state-of-the-art fire and rescue station in Catlett.
On Saturday, fire and rescue personnel and area residents celebrated the grand opening of the new building, which is located on Route 28 [Catlett Road].
The new facility includes a large apparatus bay to house fire trucks and ambulances; a day room; a training room; bunk rooms; a kitchen; an exercise room; and locker rooms and showers for men and women. It also has administrative offices and a communications room.
It cost approximately $4.6 million and was funded through a Rural Development loan from the United States Department of Agriculture.
While he acknowledged everyone should be proud of the new facility, guest speaker Dave Statter urged everyone, especially the firefighters and EMS personnel, to keep everything in perspective.
“Don't lose sight of what's important. The people who run the calls are the most important thing,” said Statter, a former volunteer firefighter and current broadcaster with WUSA Channel 9.
Remembering that they are serving the public is also key, according to Statter.
“If you do that, this firehouse and the people in it will continue to thrive, and the community will be here to support you,” he said.
