Markham This Week: Community Halloween party Friday

Much-needed rain came last Saturday, and Sunday brought another gorgeous day. The leaves are coming down; it always amuses me when some obsessive folks rush out to rake every leaf that falls. Those fallen leaves make lovely mulch, plus they are so beautiful when they fall.

Birthday greetings this week to Jay Marshall, Kevin Burke and Brooke Hutt. Hope each one has a special day with their family and friends.

The Orlean Volunteer Fire Department community Halloween party will be held at the firehouse from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31. Volunteers who can donate a few cookies or a little time to help are welcome. Also, please remember the ham and oyster dinner from 4-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8 at the firehouse.

The Fauquier High School Drama Department will present a serious play, "Mother Courage and Her Children," beginning Nov. 7 in Addison Lightfoot Auditorium. The students and their director have worked very hard, as always, to make this production super-special. Please watch for fliers and come for an evening of good theater.

Turn the clock back. Next Sunday morning (Nov. 2), 2 a.m. marks the end of daylight-saving time. Enjoy that extra hour of sleep and the morning daylight. Those of us who get up very early will enjoy the daylight hours more.

Please be sure that those who have registered to vote get to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

The kittens have turned into cats. Those "little darlings" are now into everything and as typical teen-cats they are experimenting with flaunting every rule for civilized house cats. The older felines simply watch and sigh. The dog ignores them as much as possible. "If I don't see them, maybe they will disappear."
