Barrett's sudden death penalty shot lifts FHS to district title, 2-1, over Bobcats

Fauquier needed three extra days and one additional game, but the wait was sweet satisfaction for the Falcon field hockey squad.

Senior Ellie Barrett converted a penalty shot with seconds remaining in the first sudden-death overtime period last Thursday in a 2-1 victory over Battlefield at Liberty High.

The decisive goal came in a special playoff game to decide the Cedar Run District's regular-season titlist. The contest became a requirement when the Bobcats scored a 2-1 overtime decision Oct. 20, which left the schools tied at 9-1.

The duo split the two regular-season battles, each winning on the road, 2-1, in OT.

After a scoreless first half, the score remained 0-0 until Fauquier broke through with only 5:38 left in the second half. Barrett also tallied that score.

Battlefield then launched a desperation attack, and the Bobcats needed only 60 seconds to return the game to a deadlock on Taylor Driesel's goal.

"We talk about that all the time," Falcon coach Sarah Talomie said of statistics showing teams are vulnerable to quick counterattacks after scoring.

Fauquier thwarted two other threats to require overtime.

The Falcons dominated almost all of the 15-minute overtime period, with Star Cope and Abby Wiedenhaefer placing pressure on the Bobcat goal.

With the final seconds expiring, a referee ruled the Bobcat goalkeeper had pushed a Falcon away during a wild flurry less than six feet from the goal line...

See the Wednesday print edition of the Fauquier Times-Democrat for the complete story.
