Gastronomical fuel prices put drivers over a barrel

Memorial Day weekend is the traditional start of the summer driving season. But this year, a declining economy led by historically high fuel prices may rain on plans for family picnics and road trips.

And while the economy is surely forcing some Fauquier County residents to change their plans for the summer, we’re more interested in the daily efforts to cope with the seemingly endless cost hikes.

Starting in today ’s Fauquier Weekend and continuing in next Wednesday’s Fauquier Times-Democrat, we’ll take a look at the impact gas prices are having on local residents.

The series starts with commuters, some of whom are already making adjustments to their lives to cut costs. On Wednesday, we'll examine the ways in which businesses and farmers are tackling the problem. Like residents, government officials are faced with fuel prices that are quickly out-pacing budget allotments. How will the schools, police, and emergency services deal with the increase?

In a culture that has been built around the automobile, we’re all feeling the pinch. Check out this week's Fauquier Weekend and Wednesday's Fauquier Times-Democrat for our series on the topic.
