Dominion Virginia Power claims a major upgrade to a transmission line along U.S. 50 through part of northern Fauquier would provide customers more reliable service.         The utility wants State Corporation Commission (SCC) approval to replace a 115,000-volt line with a 230,000-volt one.        "This is a proposal we think is the right thing to do," said Dominion spokeswoman Le-Ha Anderson, explaining the project would benefit 16,000 Dominion and Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC) customers in Fauquier, Loudoun and Prince William. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Fauquier Springs CC Sharks bring bite to summer swim season

7/1/2009

Sibling swimmers appear to be a boon to the Fauquier Springs Sharks this season.Gannon, Macklin and Sidney Boone aren’t the only example, either. With Macklin swimming in the 15-18 age group, Sidney serving as assistant coach and Gannon doing both, the Boones are the only trio, but Fauquier Springs also has at least a dozen other groups of swimmers that share a last name. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Tiny Ellie Barrett: 100 pounds of focused field hockey intensity

6/30/2009

Fauquier County's middle schools offer only a smattering of the sports sponsored in high school. The big sports like football, volleyball, basketball and soccer are included, and most students follow them, but sometimes interventions can alter those pursuits. That's what happened to Ellie Barrett, a member of Fauquier High's Class of 2009 and the Fauquier Times-Democrat Girls Athlete of the Year at the school.Barrett began playing soccer at the age of five and continued through three seasons at the middle school level, but soccer is a spring sport. Andrew Byrd: Blocking, catching, slugging were 250-pound Byrdman's traits

6/30/2009

When a ball is thrown to Andrew Byrd, there’s a decent chance it will hit him square in the chest and fall to the ground. As odd as that sounds for a football player who had 21 receptions last season, it's one reason Byrd has been named the 2009 Fauquier Times-Democrat Boys Athlete of the Year from Fauquier High.Taking throws off the chest wasn’t Byrd’s strategy on the football field, of course, the senior is actually known for surprisingly soft hands in that realm. A 6-foot-2, 250-pound defensive lineman, he was an offensive weapon as a receiver out of the backfield for the Fauquier Falcons last fall. | 0 comments - ›› more ...

Despite the Talented Abby Boswell, Chestnut Forks Swims at a Disadvantage

6/30/2009

The 15-18 age group in the Tri-County League is traditionally a lonely place.Younger swimmers fill the rosters of most teams in the summer swim league, while only a handful of kids are relied upon in the oldest age group. Abby Boswell is a poster child for that breakdown. Boswell is the only 15-18 swimmer for the Chestnut Forks Blue Marlins, one of the TCL’s smallest teams with 55 members. That’s one reason they don’t expect to win many meets. | 0 comments - ›› more ...
